Follow these steps, and you’ll connect with key industry professionals who can guide you toward a potential sponsor:
Go to: www.onetonline.org
In the search box at the top right, type in your desired occupation.
From the results, select your specific occupation.
Scroll to the bottom of the page to find “Professional Associations.”
Click on each association relevant to your field (focus on local or regional ones).
On each association's website, check the “About Us” section.
Reach out to the leaders of those organizations.
Email Template to Use When Reaching Out:
"Dear [Name],
I’m about to graduate from [Your University] and have been reading about the impactful work you and your organization do. [Be sure to research them so you can mention something specific.] I'm starting my local job search and would truly appreciate some career advice from someone with your expertise. I have a few questions about the industry and the regional economic outlook. It wouldn’t take more than twenty minutes of your time.
Would you be willing to meet with me? I can adjust my schedule to fit yours."
Important Note:
Don’t expect these connections to have a job for you directly. While the chances of them offering a position are low, the likelihood that they know someone who can is much higher. Your goal here is to tap into their network, so always ask for introductions where appropriate.
